The 1st International Summer School on Pervasive Adaptation was held from 7-13 September 2008 in Rimini, Italy.
Summer School Tutorial Slides
The multi-disciplinary PerAda Summer School covers a range of topics relevant to Pervasive Adaptation and provides an intense week of selected tutorials, both introductory and specialised, as well as practical teamwork projects. Pervasive Adaptation spans diverse research areas including complex networks theory, emergent computing, biologically-inspired computing models, affective computing, agent technologies, distributed and mobile computing, evolvable and adaptive pervasive systems.
The Summer School format balances the need to provide a general introduction to some key concepts, with an informative overview of latest research in some areas, as well as taking on a short-term research challenge in inter-disciplinary teams. To this end, the school will be organised around:
- Tutorials on selected topics provided by researchers in their respective areas of expertise
- Working in small groups on a research project to be developed over the week (with the potential for collaboration to continue after the summer school if desired)
- The intertwining of tutorials and group work with enjoyable social activities
The Summer School is aimed at individuals with different interests and experience, as being an expert in one research area may mean being a novice in another field. It is expected that the inter-disciplinary learning experience within an informal environment will be extremely beneficial and enjoyable.

PerAda Summer School 2008 Venue
The PerAda Summer School will take place at the HOTEL CORALLO (www.hotelcorallorimini.com), a 3-star hotel, on the Rimini Riviera located 30 meters from the sea, with a private swimming pool. All rooms are en-suite, with television and air conditioning.
The hotel restaurant offers a full breakfast buffet and a choice at lunch and at dinner of 4 first courses, 4 second courses, salad buffet, and dessert, with vegetarian options.
Weather during the first half of September in Rimini is usually very mild, with daily temperatures around 25° C, allowing for pleasant socialising between Summer School participants at the beach or hotel terrace, during the day and evening.
Rimini is a Roman city (founded in 258 BC) located on the Adriatic Sea. Its medieval city center is well-preserved and worth visiting as it is only a short walk away. The “Riviera” is famous as a summer resort in Italy due to its wide sandy beach and mild waters.
The Rimini railway station is only a 15 minute walk from the Hotel. See www.trenitalia.it for information, timetables and prices if you plan to arrive by train.
Rimini also has its own airport (RMI) with daily connections with most major European cities. It is only 7 km away from the Hotel and more information is at www.riminiairport.com
A number of low-cost airlines fly into the airport of Forlì (FRL), also sometimes called Bologna Forli airport. Although 55 km from Rimini, it can be reached in about 30 minutes by train with connections every half hour. See www.forliairport.com for more details.
A third airport option is Bologna Airport (BLQ) which is 110 Km from Rimini, but which has very frequent connections to all European hubs. The rail journey by train to Rimini takes 70 minutes and has hourly connections. See www.bologna-airport.it for more details.
